Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 pieces burger buns
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened (optional, for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.

Step 3

Reduce the heat to medium and add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 additional minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Add the ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir everything together until the beef mixture is evenly coated.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, so the flavors meld together and the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 7

While the meat mixture is simmering, optionally butter the inside of the burger buns and toast them in a clean skillet over medium heat until golden brown.

Step 8

Spoon the barbecue sloppy joe mixture evenly onto the toasted buns and serve immediately. Optionally garnish with pickles or additional barbecue sauce if desired.
