Ingredients

  • 3 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 6 cups Whole milk
  • 6 large Egg yolks
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 6 medium Ripe bananas
  • 1 box Vanilla wafers
  • 2 cups Heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract (for whipped cream)

Directions

Step 1

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the granulated sugar, flour, and salt.

Step 2

Slowly stir in the milk and egg yolks, ensuring no lumps remain.

Step 3

Place the saucepan over medium heat, and cook while stirring constantly until the custard thickens and begins to bubble, about 10-12 minutes.

Step 4

Remove the saucepan from heat, and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Allow the custard to cool slightly.

Step 5

Peel and slice the bananas into 1/4-inch thick rounds.

Step 6

In a 9x13-inch baking dish or trifle dish, layer vanilla wafers evenly along the bottom.

Step 7

Add a layer of banana slices over the wafers, followed by a layer of custard. Repeat the layers (wafers, bananas, custard) until all ingredients are used, finishing with a custard layer on top.

Step 8

Chill the pudding in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow flavors to meld.

Step 9

Before serving, prepare the whipped topping: In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract using an electric mixer until soft peaks form.

Step 10

Spread or pipe the whipped cream over the top of the pudding as a final layer.

Step 11

Optional: Garnish with crumbled vanilla wafers or banana slices just before serving.
