Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups Warm water
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

Step 2

Add the olive oil, salt, and 3 1/2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a sticky dough forms.

Step 3

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gradually add the remaining 1/2 cup of flour as you knead the dough for 8-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 4

Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil and place the dough inside. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Step 5

Punch the dough down and divide it into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a round ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced apart.

Step 6

Cover the dough balls with a towel and let them rise again for 30 minutes.

Step 7

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). If desired, use a sharp knife to gently score an ‘X’ on the top of each dough ball for a decorative touch.

Step 8

Bake the bread bowls for 25-30 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 9

Let the bread bowls cool for 15-20 minutes. Once cooled, cut off the top of each bread bowl and hollow out the center, leaving about 1 inch of bread around the edges to hold the filling.

Step 10

Fill with your favorite soup or stew and serve immediately. Enjoy!
