Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 400 grams canned diced tomatoes (with juices)
  • 400 grams canned white beans (such as cannellini or great northern beans), drained and rinsed
  • 120 milliliters low-sodium chicken or beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 whole lemon, cut into wedges (for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and cook, stirring frequently, for 4-5 minutes until softened and beginning to brown.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef to the pan and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked through, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess grease if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the cumin, coriander, cinnamon, allspice, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes to toast the spices and release their aroma.

Step 6

Pour in the canned diced tomatoes and their juices, and stir to combine.

Step 7

Add the drained and rinsed white beans, followed by the chicken or beef broth. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 9

Uncover the pan and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken slightly.

Step 10

Stir in the chopped parsley and mint, reserving a small amount for garnish if desired.

Step 11

Serve the spiced beef mixture hot, garnished with extra parsley and mint, alongside lemon wedges for squeezing over the top. Pair with rice, flatbread, or enjoy on its own.
