Ingredients

  • 15 ounces canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
  • 0.25 cup tahini (sesame paste)
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 pieces garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika (optional, for garnish)
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons water (to adjust consistency)
  • 4 pieces pita bread
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for pita chips)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or za'atar (for seasoning pita chips)
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt (for pita chips)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Cut the pita bread into triangles or wedges and place them on a baking sheet in a single layer.

Step 3

Drizzle the pita wedges with olive oil and lightly sprinkle with dried oregano or za'atar seasoning and salt. Toss gently to ensure even coating.

Step 4

Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the pita chips are golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and let them cool.

Step 5

While the pita chips are baking, prepare the hummus. In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and salt.

Step 6

Blend the hummus until it becomes smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add water one tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.

Step 7

Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl and drizzle with a small amount of olive oil. Garnish with a sprinkle of paprika for color, if desired.

Step 8

Serve the homemade hummus with the fresh pita chips on the side for dipping. Enjoy!
