Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or similar-sized baking dish with cooking spray or a little olive oil.
Trim the tough ends off the asparagus. Cut the remaining spears into 1-inch pieces and blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, until bright green and tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
If using bacon, cook the strips in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove from the skillet and place on a paper towel-lined plate to cool; then crumble into small pieces. If using salmon, make sure it is cooked, flake it into bite-sized pieces, and set aside.
Using the same skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat and sauté the finely chopped onion until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
