Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 0.25 cup chopped onion
  • 0.25 cup chopped cilantro
  • 0.25 cup salsa
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 4 pieces whole wheat burger buns
  • 1 piece sliced avocado
  • 4 pieces lettuce leaves
  • 4 slices sliced tomato
  • 4 slices cheese (optional, such as pepper jack or cheddar)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, chopped onion, chopped cilantro, salsa, ground cumin, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 2

Divide the turkey mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a burger patty about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 3

Preheat a grill or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grill grates or pan to prevent sticking.

Step 4

Cook the burger patties for approximately 4-5 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). If using cheese, add a slice to each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Step 5

While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.

Step 6

Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by a turkey patty. Top each patty with a slice of avocado, a tomato slice, and the top half of the bun.

Step 7

Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes, such as sweet potato fries, coleslaw, or a fresh salad.
