Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium, chopped yellow onion
  • 4 cloves, minced garlic
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 14 ounces diced tomatoes
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 whole bay leaves
  • 1 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until fully browned, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 5

Drain any excess fat from the pot, if necessary.

Step 6

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes to caramelize it slightly.

Step 7

Add the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and tomato sauce to the pot. Stir to combine.

Step 8

Mix in the sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, dried parsley, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper.

Step 9

Tuck in the bay leaves and pour in the water. Stir to combine all the ingredients.

Step 10

Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 60-90 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 11

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed, removing the bay leaves before serving.

Step 12

Serve hot over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta. Enjoy!
