Ingredients

  • 450 grams Fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 240 milliliters Chicken or vegetable broth
  • 120 milliliters Heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 50 grams Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 75 grams Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 150 grams French fried onions or crispy onion topping

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F).

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 4-5 minutes, until tender but still crisp. Drain and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

Step 4

Sprinkle the flour into the skillet and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.

Step 5

Gradually pour in the chicken or vegetable broth while stirring to ensure there are no lumps. Add in the heavy cream, continuing to stir until the mixture thickens, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 6

Season the sauce with salt and ground black pepper. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until melted and incorporated.

Step 7

In a large mixing bowl, combine the blanched green beans with the creamy sauce. Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 8

Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, followed by the French fried onions or crispy onion topping.

Step 9

Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden on top.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
