Ingredients

  • 12 sheets lasagna noodles
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain, and lay the noodles flat on a sheet of parchment paper to cool.

Step 3

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.

Step 4

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, sugar, basil, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, parmesan cheese, and chopped parsley. Stir until well blended.

Step 7

To assemble the lasagna, spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 8

Add a layer of lasagna noodles, slightly overlapping. Spread a third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese on top, then spoon a layer of meat sauce over it.

Step 9

Repeat the layering process (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, and meat sauce) two more times, finishing with a layer of meat sauce on top.

Step 10

Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the top layer.

Step 11

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, ensuring it does not touch the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 13

Remove from oven and let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
