Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 500 grams lean ground beef or lamb
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 400 grams canned chopped tomatoes
  • 0.5 cup black olives, pitted and sliced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1.5 kilograms potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup fresh parmesan cheese, grated
  • 0.25 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet, cooking until browned and broken into small pieces, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the tomato paste, chopped tomatoes, sliced olives, oregano, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture for 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 5

While the meat mixture simmers, place the potatoes in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.

Step 6

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the milk, butter, and parmesan cheese. Mash until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Step 7

Spread the meat mixture evenly in a baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes, smoothing out the surface with a spatula.

Step 8

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until the top is golden and slightly crispy.

Step 9

Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.
