Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 0.5 lb Ground pork
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 0.5 cup Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 3 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Chicken or beef broth
  • 0.75 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, minced garlic, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined—do not overmix.

Step 2

Form the mixture into 1-to-1.5-inch meatballs. You should get about 16-20 meatballs, depending on size.

Step 3

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the meatballs in a single layer without overcrowding the pan. Cook in batches if necessary.

Step 4

Brown the meatballs on all sides, about 6-8 minutes total. The meatballs do not need to be fully cooked through at this point. Remove them and set aside on a plate.

Step 5

In the same skillet, add butter and let it melt over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for about 1-2 minutes, until the mixture turns a light golden color.

Step 6

Gradually whisk in the chicken or beef broth, making sure to remove any lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it thicken slightly, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 7

Reduce the heat to low and slowly stir in the buttermilk. Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

Step 8

Return the meatballs to the skillet with the gravy. Cover and simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked and the flavors meld together.

Step 9

Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired, and serve warm over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
