Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 0.5 pounds ground beef
  • 0.5 pounds ground Italian sausage
  • 4 slices bacon slices
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 8 ounces button mushrooms, roughly chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 0.5 cups beef broth
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.5 cups parmesan cheese, grated (optional, for serving)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the bacon slices and cook until crispy. Remove the bacon, chop into small pieces, and set aside. Reserve 1 tablespoon of bacon drippings.

Step 3

In the same pan, add the remaining olive oil and reserved bacon drippings. Increase heat to medium-high and add the ground beef and ground Italian sausage. Cook, breaking apart the meat with a spoon, until browned. Drain excess fat and set the meat aside.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium and add the diced onion to the pan. Sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 6

Add the chopped mushrooms to the pan and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 7

Sprinkle in the oregano, basil, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to combine.

Step 8

Create a well in the center of the pan and add the tomato paste. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring, to caramelize the paste slightly.

Step 9

Stir in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Add the reserved cooked bacon pieces and browned meat back to the pan. Mix well to combine.

Step 10

Season with salt and black pepper. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 11

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 12

Serve over your favorite cooked pasta. Top with grated parmesan cheese and fresh parsley, if desired.
