Ingredients

  • 1 cup Old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1.5 cups Boiling water
  • 0.25 cup Honey
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup Warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil (for greasing)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, boiling water, honey, butter, and salt. Stir until the butter is melted and everything is well mixed. Set aside and allow the mixture to cool to lukewarm (about 20 minutes).

Step 2

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water (110°F/43°C). Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Step 3

Once the oat mixture has cooled, add the yeast mixture to the bowl and stir to combine.

Step 4

Gradually add the all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour to the wet mixture, 1 cup at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition until a dough forms.

Step 5

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a small amount of extra flour if the dough is too sticky to handle.

Step 6

Lightly grease a large bowl with vegetable oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning it to coat all sides. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7

After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it to a lightly floured surface and shape it into a loaf.

Step 8

Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan with vegetable oil and place the shaped dough into the pan. Cover it again with a towel or plastic wrap and let it rise for another 30-40 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 9

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the dough is ready, bake the bread in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

Step 10

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
