Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 package Instant yeast
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.75 cup Whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 Large egg
  • 0.5 pound Pork (ground)
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Green onions (finely chopped)
  • 1 Egg yolk (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon Water (for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.

Step 2

Heat the milk gently until warm (but not hot), then stir in the melted butter.

Step 3

Gradually add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.

Step 4

Add the egg to the dough mixture and knead for 8–10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

While the dough rises, make the filling. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground pork. Drain off any excess fat.

Step 7

Stir in the oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and cornstarch, cooking until the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 8

Remove from heat and mix in the chopped green onions. Let it cool completely before using.

Step 9

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.

Step 10

Flatten each ball into a 4-inch circle. Place a tablespoon of filling in the center and pinch the edges together to seal, forming a smooth bun.

Step 11

Place the buns seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a clean towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 12

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 13

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and water to create the egg wash. Brush it over the tops of the buns.

Step 14

Bake the buns for 20–25 minutes, or until they are golden brown.

Step 15

Let the buns cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm!
