Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp Onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 2 medium Russet potatoes
  • 2 large Carrots
  • 1 medium Yellow onion
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 0.5 tsp Dried thyme
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 4 sheets Aluminum foil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 3

Divide the ground beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2-inch thick. Set aside.

Step 4

Wash and peel the potatoes and carrots. Thinly slice the potatoes, carrots, and yellow onion into even rounds to ensure even cooking.

Step 5

In a medium bowl, toss the sliced potatoes, carrots, and onions with olive oil, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to taste.

Step 6

Cut 4 large sheets of aluminum foil, about 12 inches by 12 inches each. Place one patty in the center of each sheet.

Step 7

Distribute the vegetable mixture evenly among the four foil sheets, piling it on top of and around each beef patty.

Step 8

Place a 1/2 tablespoon pat of butter on top of each mound of vegetables for added flavor and moisture.

Step 9

Fold the aluminum foil over the meat and vegetables, crimping the edges tightly to create a sealed packet.

Step 10

Place the foil pouches on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender, and the beef patties are fully cooked (internal temperature of 160°F or 71°C).

Step 11

Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the pouches rest for 5 minutes before opening to allow the steam to settle.

Step 12

Serve the Hobo Steaks directly from the foil packets for a rustic presentation, or transfer to a plate for a more formal dining experience. Enjoy!
