Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 12 lasagna noodles

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, and chopped onion until the meat is browned and the onion is soft. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Step 3

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce over low heat for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

While the sauce is simmering, cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions. Drain them and set aside on a clean towel to prevent sticking.

Step 5

In a medium bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese until smooth.

Step 6

Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 7

Layer 3-4 lasagna noodles over the sauce, overlapping as needed. Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by 1/4 of the shredded mozzarella cheese and 1/4 of the meat sauce.

Step 8

Repeat the layering process until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella cheese on top.

Step 9

Cover the dish with aluminum foil, ensuring it doesn’t touch the cheese, and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

Step 10

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese on top is melted and bubbly.

Step 11

Let the lasagna cool for 10-15 minutes before serving to allow it to set.
