Ingredients

  • 12 oz spaghetti
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Remove any excess grease.

Step 4

Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and the remaining 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Mix until smooth.

Step 7

Spread a small amount of the meat sauce (about 1/2 cup) on the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Step 8

Layer half of the cooked spaghetti over the sauce. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the spaghetti and top with half of the remaining meat sauce.

Step 9

Repeat the layers: spaghetti, ricotta cheese mixture, and meat sauce.

Step 10

Top the casserole with the remaining 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.

Step 11

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

Step 12

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Step 13

Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
