Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 0.75 cup Whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar (for topping)
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground cinnamon (for topping)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven's broiler on high and position a rack about 6 inches from the broiler element.

Step 2

Grease and flour an 8-inch round or square cake pan. Set aside.

Step 3

In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 4

In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Use a hand or stand mixer for best results.

Step 5

Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 6

Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture in three additions, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 7

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

Step 8

Place the cake under the preheated broiler and watch closely. It should take about 8-10 minutes to cook, or until the top is golden brown and the edges begin to pull away from the pan. Rotate the pan as needed to ensure even browning.

Step 9

While the cake is broiling, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl for the topping.

Step 10

Remove the cake from the oven once it is fully cooked (a toothpick inserted should come out clean). Immediately sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly on top while the cake is still hot.

Step 11

Let the cake cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
