Heat the milk in a small saucepan over low heat until it is warm (about 110°F). Remove from heat and stir in the butter until melted. If using a bread machine, pour this mixture into the bread machine pan.
Add the eggs, flour, granulated sugar, salt, and yeast to the bread machine pan in the order recommended by your bread machine manufacturer. Choose the dough cycle and start the machine.
If not using a bread machine, combine the warm milk mixture, eggs, granulated sugar, flour, salt, and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle (about 10x16 inches).
In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, and optional chopped pecans together. Spread this mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log, pinching the seam to seal it. Shape the log into a circle, pinching the ends together.
Place the dough ring onto a greased baking sheet or large round pan. Cover it with a towel and let it rise again in a warm place for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until puffy.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the King Cake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack.
If using a plastic baby figurine, gently insert it into the bottom of the cooled cake.
To make the icing, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle the icing over the cooled cake.
While the icing is still wet, sprinkle the cake with the purple, green, and gold sugar sprinkles to decorate.
Serve and enjoy your homemade Mardi Gras King Cake!
