Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes, canned
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce, canned
  • 0.5 cup beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 bay leaf

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onions to the pot and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook, breaking the meat into small crumbles, until browned and fully cooked through. Drain excess fat, if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and beef broth.

Step 6

Add the dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, parsley, and bay leaf to the pot. Mix well to combine.

Step 7

Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings as needed. Remove the bay leaf before serving.

Step 9

Serve the sauce hot over cooked spaghetti noodles and garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
