Ingredients

  • 16 oz Spaghetti
  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 28 oz Crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated, for serving
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)
  • 4 quarts Water

Directions

Step 1

Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add a pinch of salt and cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta cooking water, then drain the spaghetti and set aside.

Step 2

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for an additional 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 4

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Cook the beef for 6-8 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Mix well to combine.

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce gets too thick, stir in the reserved pasta cooking water, a little at a time, to reach your desired consistency.

Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to coat the noodles evenly. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors together.
