Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large skillet or saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
Add ground beef and ground Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar, and 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Simmer the sauce for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and rinse them with cool water to prevent sticking. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, parsley, 1 teaspoon of salt, and black pepper. Mix until smooth.
Spread a small amount of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping them. Spread a third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles. Top with a third of the meat sauce and sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella and 0.25 cup of Parmesan cheese.
Repeat the layering process two more times, ending with a layer of meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil (try to avoid touching the cheese). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
