Ingredients

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 0.25 cup whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic (optional, minced or crushed)
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks (about 2 inches). This ensures even cooking.

Step 2

Place the potato chunks into a large pot and cover them with cold water by about an inch. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water.

Step 3

Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

Step 4

While the potatoes are cooking, heat the heavy cream and milk in a small saucepan over low heat until warm. (If using garlic, add it to the mixture to infuse flavor.) Do not let it boil.

Step 5

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them well and return them to the pot. Allow the potatoes to sit in the pot for 1-2 minutes to remove excess moisture.

Step 6

Add the butter to the potatoes and mash using a potato masher or ricer until smooth and creamy.

Step 7

Gradually add the warm cream and milk mixture, mashing and stirring as you go, until the desired consistency is reached.

Step 8

Taste the mashed potatoes and season with the remaining 0.5 teaspoons of salt and the black pepper. Adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 9

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving dish and garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.

Step 10

Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!
