Ingredients

  • 1 cup Heavy cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 4 cups Ice cubes
  • 0.5 cup Kosher salt (or rock salt)
  • 1 piece Gallon-sized resealable plastic bag
  • 1 piece Quart-sized resealable plastic bag

Directions

Step 1

In a quart-sized resealable plastic bag, combine the heavy cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. Seal the bag tightly, making sure to remove as much air as possible.

Step 2

In a gallon-sized resealable plastic bag, add the ice cubes and kosher salt. Shake lightly to distribute the salt evenly around the ice.

Step 3

Place the sealed quart-sized bag with the ice cream mixture into the larger gallon-sized bag with the ice and salt.

Step 4

Seal the gallon-sized bag tightly, again removing as much air as possible.

Step 5

Shake the bags vigorously for 7-10 minutes. Be sure to hold the bag with a towel or wear gloves, as it will become quite cold.

Step 6

After shaking, check the consistency of the ice cream. It should be thick and creamy. If it’s not quite ready, shake for another 2-3 minutes.

Step 7

Once the ice cream is ready, carefully remove the quart-sized bag from the larger bag. Wipe the outside of the small bag to remove any salt water before opening it.

Step 8

Serve immediately for soft-serve texture, or place the ice cream in a freezer-safe container and freeze for 1-2 hours for a firmer consistency.
