Ingredients

  • 350 grams All-purpose flour
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 150 milliliters Milk (warm)
  • 4 tablespoons Plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter (melted, for brushing)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the active dry yeast, granulated sugar, and 2 tablespoons of the warm milk. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the frothy yeast mixture, yogurt, remaining warm milk, vegetable oil, and the egg. Mix until you form a soft dough.

Step 3

On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can knead the dough using a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5 minutes.

Step 4

Lightly oil a clean bowl and place the dough inside. Cover with a damp kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until the dough doubles in size.

Step 5

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and roll out with a rolling pin into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4-inch thick.

Step 6

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place one rolled-out naan into the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles form on the surface. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown spots appear.

Step 7

Brush the warm naan with melted butter and keep it covered with a clean kitchen towel while you cook the remaining naans.

Step 8

Serve the naan warm, alongside your favorite curry or chutney.
