Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet potatoes
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 10 small fresh sage leaves
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 0.25 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.75 cup pecans
  • 0.25 cup panko breadcrumbs

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

Peel and chop the sweet potatoes into large chunks. Place them in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, approximately 15–20 minutes.

Step 3

While the sweet potatoes are cooking, melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a small skillet over low heat. Add the sage leaves and cook for 2–3 minutes until fragrant and slightly crispy. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 4

Once the sweet potatoes are cooked, drain them and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Mash the potatoes until smooth using a potato masher or a hand mixer.

Step 5

Stir in the sage-infused butter, heavy cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined and creamy.

Step 6

Pour the sweet potato mixture into a greased 9x9-inch (or equivalent) casserole dish and spread evenly.

Step 7

In a small bowl, combine the pecans, panko breadcrumbs, and the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter (melted). Toss until the mixture is evenly coated.

Step 8

Sprinkle the pecan topping over the sweet potato layer in the casserole dish.

Step 9

Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the topping is golden and the casserole is heated through.

Step 10

Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh sage leaves if desired.
