Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or lightly grease the cups.
In a small bowl, combine the wheat bran and boiling water. Stir well and let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to soften.
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, mix the pumpkin puree, buttermilk, brown sugar, egg, and vegetable oil until smooth and fully combined.
Add the softened wheat bran mixture into the wet ingredients and stir until incorporated.
Gradually fold the wet mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir just until all the flour is moistened; do not overmix.
If using raisins and/or walnuts, gently fold them into the batter.
Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full.
Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.
Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve warm or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. These muffins can also be frozen for longer storage.
