Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (optional)
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces canned tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes, or until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

If using ground beef, add it to the pot and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces with a spatula. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and water until the mixture is well combined.

Step 6

Add the dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, ground black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine.

Step 7

Lower the heat to a simmer, cover partially, and let the sauce cook for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 9

Serve over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Step 10

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
