Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Beef cube steak
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Chicken bouillon powder

Directions

Step 1

Place the beef cube steaks on a cutting board and use a meat mallet to tenderize them further, if necessary.

Step 2

In a shallow dish, combine the flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.

Step 3

In another shallow dish, whisk together the buttermilk and eggs until smooth.

Step 4

Dredge each piece of steak first in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk mixture, and finally back in the flour mixture, ensuring each piece is fully coated. Set aside on a plate.

Step 5

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter to the skillet and allow it to melt. The oil should be hot but not smoking.

Step 6

Fry the steaks in batches, cooking each side for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove the steaks and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Step 7

Once all the steaks are cooked, remove most of the oil from the skillet, leaving about 2 tablespoons, and keep any browned bits in the pan.

Step 8

Add 2 tablespoons of flour to the remaining oil in the skillet and whisk together over medium heat to make a roux.

Step 9

Slowly whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Add the chicken bouillon powder and continue to whisk until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.

Step 10

Serve the chicken fried steaks warm with the creamy gravy poured over the top. Pair with mashed potatoes and green beans for a classic Southern meal.
