Ingredients

  • 16 ounces Steak (sirloin, ribeye, or your preferred cut)
  • 1 teaspoon Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 2 large Onions (yellow or sweet, thinly sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Remove the steak from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking.

Step 2

Season both sides of the steak with freshly ground black pepper and garlic powder. Pat the seasonings into the steak gently with your fingers.

Step 3

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Once the oil is shimmering, add the sliced onions.

Step 4

Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes until they are golden brown and caramelized. Reduce the heat if they start to brown too quickly.

Step 5

Add the teaspoon of balsamic vinegar to the onions and stir well. Let them cook for 1-2 more minutes, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Step 6

In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the steak.

Step 7

Sear the steak for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, or adjust the timing based on your preferred doneness. Use a meat thermometer: 130°F for medium-rare, 140°F for medium, and 150°F for medium-well.

Step 8

Add the unsalted butter to the skillet during the last minute of cooking, spooning the melted butter over the steak to enhance its flavor.

Step 9

Remove the steak from the skillet and let it rest on a cutting board for 5-10 minutes covered loosely with aluminum foil.

Step 10

Slice the steak against the grain and serve topped with the caramelized onions and a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley.
