Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons turmeric powder
  • 0.5 cup cold water
  • 1 pound ground beef (lean)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bunch green onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon allspice
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 cup low sodium beef broth
  • 0.25 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Directions

Step 1

1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and turmeric powder. Cut the unsalted butter into small cubes and incorporate into the flour mixture with your fingers or a pastry cutter, forming a crumbly texture.

Step 2

2. Add cold water a little at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. It should be firm but pliable. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

Step 3

3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Drain excess fat.

Step 4

4. Add the chopped onion, green onion, and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

5. Stir in the thyme, allspice, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to coat the beef and onions with spices.

Step 6

6. Pour in the low sodium beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Allow cooking until the liquid is mostly reduced, about 5 minutes.

Step 7

7. Stir in the bread crumbs to thicken the mixture. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.

Step 8

8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 9

9. Dust a clean surface with flour. Roll out the chilled dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out circles approximately 6 inches in diameter.

Step 10

10. Place about 2 tablespoons of the beef filling onto one half of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape and press the edges with a fork to seal.

Step 11

11. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Brush each patty with the egg wash to help achieve a golden color during baking.

Step 12

12. Place patties on a lined baking sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

Step 13

13. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade Low Sodium Jamaican Beef Patties!
