Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1 unit Large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Pure vanilla extract
  • 0.75 cup Fruit jam (low-sodium or homemade)
  • 2 cups Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 0.5 cup Powdered sugar

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, melted unsalted butter, the egg, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture.

Step 3

Stir the ingredients together until a dough begins to form. You may need to add a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.

Step 4

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

Once risen, gently deflate the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick on a floured surface.

Step 7

Using a round cutter, cut out circles of dough and place them onto a paper-lined baking sheet.

Step 8

Cover the dough circles with a clean cloth and allow them to rise again for about 30 minutes.

Step 9

Heat vegetable oil in a large pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry the doughnuts in batches, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown on both sides.

Step 10

Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on paper towels.

Step 11

Using a piping bag fitted with a nozzle, fill each doughnut with approximately one tablespoon of low-sodium jam.

Step 12

Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar before serving.
