Ingredients

  • 8 ounces Low-sodium mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup All-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons Water
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Italian herbs
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 cups Olive oil (for frying)

Directions

Step 1

Cut the low-sodium mozzarella cheese into sticks about 3 to 4 inches long and 1/2 inch thick.

Step 2

Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes. In the first dish, mix together the all-purpose flour and cornstarch. In the second dish, beat the eggs with the water. In the third dish, combine the panko breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, dried Italian herbs, and black pepper.

Step 3

Coat each cheese stick in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. Dip into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, and then coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture. Repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps for a double coating, which helps prevent cheese leakage.

Step 4

Place the coated mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 1 hour. This helps the coating adhere better and ensures the sticks don't melt too quickly when fried.

Step 5

In a deep skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). It’s important to maintain the correct temperature for the best frying results.

Step 6

Carefully add a few mozzarella sticks to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on all sides.

Step 7

Remove the sticks with a slotted spoon and drain them on a plate lined with paper towels.

Step 8

Continue frying the remaining mozzarella sticks in batches, making sure the oil temperature remains consistent.

Step 9

Serve immediately while hot and crispy. Enjoy with your choice of low-sodium marinara sauce for dipping.
