Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 unit Large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Cold water
  • 6 medium Apples (Granny Smith or a mix of firm apples)
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch
  • 0.5 cup Raisins
  • 0.25 cup Sliced almonds
  • 0.25 cup Apricot jam

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and granulated sugar. Cut the unsalted butter into small cubes and add to the mixture. Rub the mixture with your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

Step 3

Beat the egg in a small bowl and add to the dough, reserving 1 tablespoon for later. Add the cold water and mix until the dough comes together. Form into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.

Step 4

Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. In another large bowl, mix the apple slices with brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, lemon juice, cornstarch, and raisins. Set aside.

Step 5

Roll out about two-thirds of the dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch springform pan, pressing it up the sides. Trim any excess dough.

Step 6

Pour the apple mixture into the dough-lined pan and spread evenly.

Step 7

Roll out the remaining dough and cut into strips to create a lattice pattern on top of the apples. Brush the reserved egg over the lattice and sprinkle the sliced almonds over the top.

Step 8

Place the pan on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake for 60-70 minutes, until the crust is golden and the apples are tender.

Step 9

Warm the apricot jam slightly, and brush over the hot appeltaart for a glossy finish.

Step 10

Allow to cool slightly before removing the springform edge. Serve warm or at room temperature.
