Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup no-salt-added tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons no-salt-added tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 0.5 cup low-sodium beef broth

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for about 5 minutes, until the vegetables are soft and the onion is translucent.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional 1 minute, stirring frequently to avoid burning.

Step 4

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the lean ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it is browned throughout and no pink remains, approximately 5-7 minutes.

Step 5

Drain any excess fat from the skillet and return to the stove.

Step 6

Stir in the no-salt-added tomato sauce, no-salt-added tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, ground black pepper, and red pepper flakes, if using.

Step 7

Add the low-sodium beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low and allow the mixture to simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thickened and flavors have melded together.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed, though additional salt should not be necessary.

Step 10

Serve the Low Sodium Sloppy Joe meat on your choice of whole grain buns or over baked potatoes for a lower carb option.
