Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme, chopped
  • 2 cups Heavy cream
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1.5 cups Gruyere cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons Chives, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly, about 1/8-inch thick, using a mandoline or a sharp knife for even slices.

Step 3

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and thyme, and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Pour in the heavy cream, then add the black pepper and nutmeg. Stir well and bring to a slight simmer. Remove from heat.

Step 5

In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, arrange a layer of potato slices. Pour a third of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle a third of the grated Gruyere cheese on top.

Step 6

Repeat this layering process twice more, ending with a top layer of cheese.

Step 7

Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

Step 8

After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Step 9

Let the gratin cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped chives if desired.
