Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 0.75 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 units large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda. Set aside.

Step 3

In another bowl, combine the granulated sugar and orange zest. Use your fingers to rub the zest into the sugar until fragrant. This releases the oils from the zest.

Step 4

Add the orange juice, buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the sugar mixture. Whisk until everything is well combined and smooth.

Step 5

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until all the flour mixture is incorporated. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 6

If using, fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed.

Step 7

Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan, smoothing out the top with a spatula.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 10

Optional: Decorate the cake with orange slices or dust with powdered sugar before serving.
