Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Low sodium cheese brats
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 pieces Large yellow onions
  • 1 tablespoon Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 4 pieces Whole wheat brat buns
  • 4 pieces Lettuce leaves
  • 4 pieces Tomato slices

Directions

Step 1

Slice the large yellow onions evenly into thin rings.

Step 2

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the sliced onions to the skillet, and spread them out evenly. Cook them slowly, stirring occasionally until they are golden brown and caramelized, which will take about 20-25 minutes.

Step 4

Halfway through cooking the onions, add 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar to aid in caramelization.

Step 5

Once the onions are caramelized, add 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar to the skillet and stir to coat the onions. This will give them a lovely tangy-sweet flavor. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 6

Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium heat.

Step 7

Place the low sodium cheese brats on the grill and cook for about 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are thoroughly heated and have grill marks.

Step 8

Slice the whole wheat brat buns and place them cut side down on the grill for the last 3 minutes of cooking the brats to lightly toast them.

Step 9

To assemble, place a lettuce leaf in each brat bun, followed by a grilled cheese brat.

Step 10

Top each brat with a generous portion of the caramelized onions and a slice of tomato.

Step 11

Season lightly with black pepper if desired before serving.
