Ingredients

  • 500 grams Pork belly
  • 3 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon White pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Red food coloring (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Cut the pork belly into long strips about 2 inches wide. This will help the meat to cook evenly and allow the marinade to penetrate better.

Step 2

In a large bowl, mix together hoisin sauce, low sodium soy sauce, honey, Shaoxing wine, garlic powder, five-spice powder, sesame oil, white pepper, and red food coloring (if using).

Step 3

Place the pork strips into the bowl, ensuring they are well-coated with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to let the flavors develop.

Step 4

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top.

Step 5

Remove the pork from the marinade, reserving the marinade for later use. Place the pork strips on the wire rack.

Step 6

Roast the pork in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, turning and basting with the reserved marinade every 10 minutes to enhance the flavor and achieve a caramelized finish.

Step 7

After 40 minutes, increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C). Roast for an additional 10 minutes, or until the pork is beautifully charred and sticky on the edges.

Step 8

Let the char siu rest for 5 minutes before slicing into thin pieces. Serve with steamed rice or noodles, and enjoy your low sodium char siew meal.
