Ingredients

  • 300 grams All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • 150 milliliters Warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 200 grams Ground chicken
  • 2 cloves Minced garlic
  • 50 grams Minced onion
  • 1 tablespoon Low sodium soy sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 50 grams Cooked green peas
  • 50 grams Cooked carrots, diced
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, instant yeast, baking powder, and sugar.

Step 2

Slowly add the warm water to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

Step 3

Add the unsalted butter to the dough and knead it on a lightly floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Step 4

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 5

While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. Heat a pan over medium heat and add the sesame oil.

Step 6

Add minced garlic and onion to the pan, sautéing until fragrant and the onions become translucent.

Step 7

Add ground chicken to the pan and cook until it is no longer pink.

Step 8

Stir in low sodium soy sauce, ground black pepper, cooked green peas, and diced carrots. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes and then set aside to cool.

Step 9

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces.

Step 10

Roll out each piece into a small circle, about 10 cm in diameter.

Step 11

Place about 1-2 tablespoons of the meat filling in the center of each circle.

Step 12

Gather the edges of the dough over the filling and pinch them together to seal the bun.

Step 13

Place each bun seam-side down on a small piece of parchment paper.

Step 14

Let the buns rest for 15 minutes while you prepare a steamer.

Step 15

Steam the buns in a preheated steamer for about 15-20 minutes until the buns are fluffy and fully cooked.

Step 16

Serve warm and enjoy your low sodium Bakpao.
