Ingredients

  • 2 pieces (6 oz each) Lean steak (such as sirloin or tenderloin)
  • 2 large Yellow onion
  • 2 teaspoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Balsamic vinegar
  • 1 cup Low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 sprigs Fresh thyme (optional, for garnish)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Garlic powder

Directions

Step 1

Take the lean steaks out of the refrigerator and allow them to come to room temperature for about 15 minutes. Pat them dry with a paper towel.

Step 2

Season both sides of the steaks with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside.

Step 3

Peel and thinly slice the yellow onions. Set them aside.

Step 4

Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the onion slices and stir to coat them with the oil.

Step 5

Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes or until they are soft and caramelized. If the onions start to brown too quickly, reduce the heat to medium-low and add a splash of low-sodium beef broth to deglaze the pan. Stir frequently to prevent burning.

Step 6

Once the onions are caramelized, stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.

Step 7

In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 teaspoon of olive oil over medium-high heat.

Step 8

Add the steaks to the skillet and sear for 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or adjust the cooking time to your preferred level of doneness.

Step 9

Once cooked, remove the steaks from the heat and allow them to rest for 5 minutes to retain their juices.

Step 10

To serve, place the steaks on plates and generously top with the caramelized onions. Garnish with fresh thyme sprigs if desired.

Step 11

Enjoy your low-fat steak with caramelized onions!
