Ingredients

  • 500 grams lean ground beef
  • 1 medium, finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves, minced garlic
  • 1 medium, grated carrot
  • 1 stalk, finely chopped celery
  • 1 medium, finely chopped red bell pepper
  • 400 grams, diced canned tomatoes
  • 100 ml low sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the finely chopped onion and garlic to the skillet, and sauté for about 2 minutes until they become translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the grated carrot, chopped celery, and red bell pepper. Cook for an additional 3 minutes to soften the vegetables.

Step 4

Add the lean ground beef to the skillet. Cook the meat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until it is browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Drain any excess fat from the skillet to keep the dish low in fat.

Step 6

Stir in the canned diced tomatoes, beef broth, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.

Step 7

Add the dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper to the mixture, stirring well to incorporate all the flavors.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the liquid to slightly reduce.

Step 9

Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary, then remove from heat.

Step 10

Use the savory beef filling as desired, whether filling bell peppers, tacos, or as part of another dish.
