Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg white
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1.5 cups mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine lean ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, bread crumbs, egg white, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well and shape into 4 oval patties.

Step 2

Heat olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3

In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook for 3-4 minutes or until browned and reduced in size.

Step 4

Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir continuously for about 1 minute to remove any raw flour taste.

Step 5

Gradually add the beef broth and the remaining 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce to the skillet while stirring to ensure a smooth sauce.

Step 6

Add the dried thyme to the gravy and stir. Return the cooked patties to the skillet, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce.

Step 7

Simmer the patties in the gravy for about 10 minutes, or until the gravy thickens and the flavors meld.

Step 8

Serve the patties hot, topped with mushroom gravy and optionally garnished with chopped parsley.
