Ingredients

  • 2 pieces Large onions
  • 100 grams Chickpea flour (Besan)
  • 0.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Ground coriander
  • 0.5 teaspoons Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 150 milliliters Water
  • 1 for greasing Olive oil spray

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2

Peel and slice the onions in half, then finely slice them into half-moons. Place the sliced onions in a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, combine chickpea flour, baking powder, ground cumin, ground coriander, turmeric powder, salt, and red chili powder.

Step 4

Gradually add water to the dry ingredients, stirring continuously until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onions but slightly runny.

Step 5

Add the batter to the bowl of sliced onions along with the chopped fresh coriander leaves. Mix thoroughly to ensure the onion slices are well-coated.

Step 6

Using a tablespoon, scoop a portion of the onion mixture and place it onto the prepared baking tray. Repeat this step, leaving a small gap between each bhaji.

Step 7

Lightly spray the tops of the bhajis with olive oil spray to enhance crispness.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, turning them halfway through the baking time.

Step 9

Remove the bhajis from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Step 10

Serve your low-fat onion bhajis hot with your favorite chutney or yogurt dip.
