Ingredients

  • 250 grams macaroni pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 400 grams canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons grated low-fat Parmesan cheese
  • 10 leaves fresh basil leaves, for garnish
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Boil a large pot of salted water for the macaroni pasta. Once boiling, add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute, being careful not to let it burn.

Step 4

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.

Step 5

Pour in the water and bring the sauce to a light simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook, uncovered, for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens.

Step 6

Once the sauce is ready, add the cooked macaroni pasta to the skillet. Toss the pasta until it is well coated with the tomato sauce.

Step 7

Remove the skillet from the heat and sprinkle the grated low-fat Parmesan cheese over the pasta.

Step 8

Divide the pasta among serving plates, garnish each with fresh basil leaves, and serve immediately.
