Ingredients

  • 500 grams lean ground beef
  • 1 medium, chopped onion
  • 1 small, seeded and finely chopped scotch bonnet pepper
  • 2 cloves, minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon, dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon allspice
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon, chopped cold butter
  • 0.5 cup cold water
  • 1 large, beaten egg

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and scotch bonnet pepper. Cook until the onion is soft, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 2

Stir in the minced garlic, turmeric, curry powder, thyme, allspice, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the spices to become fragrant.

Step 3

Add the lean ground beef to the skillet. Cook, stirring frequently, until browned, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4

Pour in the low-sodium beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water. Add this slurry to the beef mixture.

Step 5

Continue cooking until the mixture thickens, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool while preparing the pastry.

Step 6

In a large bowl, mix the whole wheat flour and a pinch of salt. Add the cold, chopped butter, and mix with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

Step 7

Slowly add 0.5 cup of cold water, combining until a dough forms. Knead gently until smooth, then wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 15 minutes.

Step 8

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 9

Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out circles using a 6-inch round cutter.

Step 10

Place approximately 2 tablespoons of the meat filling in the center of each dough circle.

Step 11

Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges together using a fork to seal.

Step 12

Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.

Step 13

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 14

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
