Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packets active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 0.5 cup nonfat milk
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 large egg white

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a separate bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour and salt.

Step 3

Once the yeast is activated, add the nonfat milk, unsweetened applesauce, and egg white to the yeast mixture. Stir well to combine.

Step 4

Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon until the dough begins to come together.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic. You may need to add a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.

Step 6

Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces.

Step 8

Shape each piece into a round ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between each roll.

Step 9

Cover the rolls with the kitchen towel again and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 11

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 13-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Step 12

Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before serving.
