Ingredients

  • 500 grams Lean beef shoulder or chuck
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 large Onion
  • 2 medium Carrots
  • 2 Celery stalks
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme
  • 250 milliliters Beef broth
  • 125 milliliters Red wine (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Flour
  • 1 sheet Puff pastry (light or reduced-fat)
  • 1 Egg

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

Step 2

Cut the beef into bite-sized chunks and season with salt and pepper.

Step 3

Heat the olive oil in a large, oven-proof pan over medium-high heat. Add the beef chunks and brown them on all sides. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.

Step 4

Chop the onion, carrots, and celery into small pieces. Mince the garlic.

Step 5

In the same pan, add the onions, carrots, celery, and garlic. Sauté the vegetables until the onions become translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 6

Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir well to coat. This will help thicken the sauce later.

Step 7

Add the beef back to the pan. Stir in the beef broth, red wine (if using), Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 8

Cover the pan and transfer it to the preheated oven. Let it cook for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened.

Step 9

Once cooked, remove the pan from the oven and let it cool slightly.

Step 10

Pour the beef mixture into a pie dish and let it cool while you prepare the pastry.

Step 11

Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface, ensuring it's large enough to cover the pie dish.

Step 12

Cover the pie dish with the rolled-out pastry, trimming any excess edges. You can crimp the edges for a decorative finish.

Step 13

Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush a thin layer over the pastry to ensure it becomes golden and crisp when baked.

Step 14

Increase the oven temperature to 200°C (400°F). Place the pie on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden.

Step 15

Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your low fat classic steak pie!
