Ingredients

  • 300 grams Whole wheat pasta
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 400 grams Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon Red pepper flakes
  • 30 grams Low-fat Parmesan cheese
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 10 leaves Fresh basil leaves

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add whole wheat pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, about 9-12 minutes.

Step 2

While the pasta is cooking, heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Step 3

Mince the garlic and chop the onion. Add them to the saucepan and sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. Mix well to combine.

Step 5

Add dried basil, dried oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Stir the sauce and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 6

Once the pasta is cooked, drain it and reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water.

Step 7

Add the cooked pasta to the sauce, tossing to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add some reserved pasta water to achieve the desired consistency.

Step 8

Serve the pasta hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves and grated low-fat Parmesan cheese.
